Discover the Power of Medicinal Mushrooms

Mushrooms are a fairly recent addition to the western herbalist’s clinical toolkit, even though their traditional use spans millennia. These remarkable fungi are packed with bioactive compounds that support various aspects of health, from immunity to mental clarity. Our medicinal mushroom tincture range has been designed to optimise the potency of the finished product according to our clinical needs so that we can fully incorporate them into our herbal practice and help our patients on their healing journey.

Organic, High Quality, Potent and Convenient

The quality of commercial preparations varies enormously in both price and efficacy. At one end of the market there are premium products, generally organic and locally produced, and at the other dried powders from China where the provenance is hard to establish and where adulteration may be common. At Urban Fringe we sit somewhere in the middle because we do not have the resources to grow our own mushrooms, and our whole philosophy is to provide medicines that we are comfortable with using in our clinical practice, that our patients can afford, making them accessible to a much bigger demographic. The fact is that the people who would probably benefit the most from medicinal mushroom products are the least likely to be able to afford them, given the state of the market.

We have achieved this by making our own tinctures, sourcing organic, high quality powdered mushrooms from highly reputable suppliers to traditional Chinese medicine practitioners.

We have arrived at the point where we are satisfied both with our supply chain and with the methods we use to produce tinctures. We are satisfied that the final product is a valuable addition to our dispensary, and are using mushrooms more and more in our clinical practice.

Tincture Extraction Process

We use organic powdered mushrooms to create our 1:4 mushroom tinctures. Our process is a double extraction process, and this guarantees that all the active compounds in the mushroom are efficiently extracted into our medicine. Quality and process are important to us, and we make all our medicines at the dispensary in small batches to ensure high quality and potency.

The cell walls of funghi are formed of polysaccharide chains such as beta glucans. It is these compounds which are responsible for many of the immunological functions of medicinal mushrooms and they are extracted through hot water extraction.

We begin with a long slow decoction process at a constant 60°C (which is important, as any hotter than this will destroy some of the vital active compounds), and then use the liquid from this process to add to more mushroom powder, and then use our standard tincture process.
