Verbena officinalis

Common name: Vervain (not to be confused with lemon verbena or French Verbena)

Family: Verbenaceae

Part used: Flowering aerial parts

Habitat: Hardy perennial with erect woody stems with small five lobed violet flowers. Vervain grows in grassland, woodland and verges, widespread in Europe.

Constituents: Iridoid glycosides, flavonoids, triterpenes, phenylpropaniud glycosides

Actions: Bitter digestive tonic, antispasmodic, diaphoretic (mild), urinary tract tonic, sedative, relaxing nervine

Traditional and current uses:

• Low mood, anxiety

• Pain, restlessness and irritability

• Gall stone pain

• Particularly useful in low mood following flu or long illness

•  Pain associated with depression
