Daily adult dose unless otherwise prescribed: 1/2 to 1 tsp per mug of boiling water, infuse covered for 10 minutes, upt to three times a day or once 30 minutes before bed. 

Avoid during breastfeeding, blends which include smaller amounts of valerian are considered safe.

Valeriana officinalis

Habitat: Valerian is a robust perennial plant which dies back in winter and grows again the following spring, reaching 1m tall. It is native across Britain and Euope, especially along waterways and in other damp sunny areas. 

Constituents: Volatile oils (at least 64 individual constituents have been identified here, including sesquiterpenes, monoterpenes and esters), alkaloids, iridoid epoxy-esters, flavonoids lignans and other phenolic acids.  

Actions: Sedative, spasmolytic, hypotensive, carminative, mild analgesic

Traditional and current uses:

  • Insomnia or disturbed sleep patterns
  • Anxiety, hysteria, restlessness, tension, stress, nervousness
  • Migraine
  • Epilepsy
  • High blood presure, particularly relating to stress
  • Intestinal cramps, colitis, dyspepsia, IBS
