Family: Rosaceae

Part used: Flowers, petals or rosehips (here we talk about the flowers)

Description and Habitat: With an ancient history of cultivation and association with love, roses have been cultivated into thousands of varieties. Medicinally we often look to the dog rose (wild across Europe) Rosa canina, or the Damask rose, Rosa damascena because of their strong aroma, which is an important part of the traditional therapeutic value of rose. 

Constituents: Volatile oil, phenolic acids particularly gallic acid, flavonoids including rutin, quercitrin, myricetin, kaempferol, anthocyanins.

Actions: Astringent, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, cooling, soothing and uplifting

Traditional and current uses:

  • A soothing aromatic for heartbreak, grief or shock
  • As an eyewash for sore eyes (distilled rosewater)
  • Applied topically for skin inflammation and minor swellings
  • Sore tummies in children where the cause is emtional upset
  • Mild digestive upset in adults, nervous diarrhoea
