Common name: Frankincense
Family: Burseraceae
Part used: Oleo-gum resin from the stem of the plant.
Habitat: A deciduous tree gorowing to 9 - 15m tall, native to arid or semi-arid regions of India where the average daytime temerature is 33 - 42°c.
Constituents: Oils, terpenoids, essential oils (up to 16% of resin is essential oil, the majority being alpha-thujene and p-cymene.) Pentacyclic triterpene acids.
Folklore and History: Famously a gift at the birthof Jesus, Frankincense has an ancient history of ceremonial use to soothe the sould of the dead and in religious ritual. In Ayurvedic medicine it has long been venerated as a powerful medicine which has likely influenced its medicinal and cultural use in the rest of the world.
Actions: Powerfully antioxidant, antiviral, analgesic, sedative, hepatoprotective, blood sugar lowering, blood lipid lowering, antiatherosclerotic, stimulates extretion of mucous.
