Eupatorium perfoliatum

Common names: Boneset, Common Boneset, Thoroughwort

Family: Asteraceae

Parts used: Aerial parts during or just after flowering

Habitat: Native to North America where it is widely distributed in moist woodland. Boneset is a particularly good butterfly food and habitat plant.

Constituents: Sesquiterpene lactones, Polysaccharides, Flavonoids including kaempferol, quercetin and others, diterpenes, phytosterols, small amoiunts of volatile oil and PABA.

Actions: Antipyretic, Aperient, Diaphoretic, Emetic (in large doses), Laxative (in large doses).  

Traditional and current uses:

• Colds and flu

• Acute bronchitis

• Fevers

• Catarrh in nose and throat

• Constipation

• Dyspepsia and to improve digestive funtion in the elderly
