Bladderwrack (Fucus versiculosus) dried herb
Unless otherwise prescribed, daily dose of 0.8-2 gm
Avoid in: hyperthyroidism, cardiac problems, pregnancy and breastfeeding. Overdosage may lead to hyperthyroidism, tremmor, increade pulse rate and elevated blood pressure. However, there is wide variation between individuals in susceptibility to excess iodine.
Bladderwrack consists of the entire thallus of Fucus vesiculosus, dried as soon as possible after collection. It contains trace minerals, notably iodine, of which part occurs as iodide but more than half is organically bound to proteins or amino acids. By virtue of its iodine content bladderwrack is thought to stimulate the thyroid gland, thus increasing basal metabolism; it also appears to assist the problem of lipid balance associated with obesity. Thus in France, in particular, bladderwrack has traditionally been used to assist in weight loss complementary to dietary measures.
